David Beckham Visits Abused Kids In Manila
First Published: December 2, 2011 11:09 AM EST Credit: AFP Caption David Beckham of the Los Angeles Galaxy walks with boys during a clinic session at Rizal memorial stadium in Manila on December 2, 2011MANILA, Philippines -- Away from fans prying eyes, David Beckham took time out from soccer to share his experiences and listen to Filipino children struggling to rebuild their broken lives. Its so important to have a dream, Beckham told the former street children Friday at a UNICEF-supported shelter in a suburb of Manila, the Philippine capital where he and his teammates from the Los Angeles Galaxy are playing an exhibition against the countrys national team this weekend. On the sidelines of the Galaxys Manila trip, Beckham, who is also a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, visited the shelter for children who have been rescued from the streets. They shared tales of domestic abuse and crime some fell victim to drugs or were abandoned by their parents. Wearing a black UNICEF T-shirt, the 36-year-old former England captain listened intently in a private conversation with a group of five children and told them how he started playing when he was 7 years old and eventually achieving his dream of playing for Manchester United. UNICEF asked that the names of the children and the shelter not be disclosed to protect their privacy. Conan, a 17-year-old who was abandoned by his parents when he was 7, told Beckham that he dreams of joining the Philippine team and later becoming a coach. He played in the Street Childrens Football World Cup last year in South Africa, where the Philippines beat South Africa 2-1. The younger children were awe-struck while listening to one of the worlds best known athletes. One 12-year-old girl named Shaina said she wants to be a nurse to help the sick. She often held Beckhams hand as she and the other children guided him around the facility, unfazed by the tattoos that adorn his arms. Beckham told the UNICEF staff it was incredible that the children had gone through so much in such a short space of time in their young lives and learned responsibility and respect. He said he was lucky to have had the support of both his parents and it was so sad to see so many children that dont have that support, dont have that love. He later listened to JM, a former drug user who turned 18 on Friday, sing a rap song in the Filipino language on how drugs ruin lives. After a staff translated the song for Beckham, he gave him a double thumbs up, saying, Youre good! The shelter that houses 136 kids has a small soccer field surrounded by separate cottages for boys and girls, a school, a basketball court and a training facility where children learn to sew clothes and cut hair. Beckham posed with the children for a picture wearing a blue graduation gown and cap made at the sewing room, where he also tried his hand at making a pillow case. What struck me the most about coming into the center was it was a real happy place, a real inspiring place, he told The Associated Press. They are teaching kids unbelievable values. Every child I spoke to today they all have dreams, they all have inspirations. A father of four children, Beckham said it was heartbreaking to think majority of these children havent got parents, or havent got parents to care for them and love them. Beckham said that because of work, its been difficult for him to do some of the things I would like to do going out into the field like I obviously have today. I think it is important to raise awareness to many issues around the world, many worries around the world, he said. In my position, thankfully, I can create that kind of interest and awareness to things that are happening around the world. A highlight of his visit was a brief practice followed by a short game in which he joined one half of the shelters team. The star sweated under the midday sun as he helped their shoeless goalkeeper. His side lost 1-0. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

Kanye West Cites Nietzsche While Fighting Claim He Stole the Song 'Stronger'
Getty Images Kanye West has cited 19th century German philosopherFriedrichNietzsche in an attempt to convince the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold the dismissal of a claim he stole his hit song "Stronger" from another songwriter. PHOTOS: Top 10 Highest-Paid Music Artists In a brief submitted Friday, West's lawyers make the case that it's ludicrous for the plaintiff, Vincent Peters, to make a copyright allegation on a rap lyric said to derive from one of Nietzsche's century-old maxims. Peters, a Virginia man, sued West in 2010 claiming that "Stronger," which won a Grammy and is one of the most downloaded songs on iTunes of all time, was an illegitimate copy of a song he recorded in 2006. Peters argued that he gave a copy of his song to West's aptly named business manager, John Monopoly, whom Peters believes provided West access to his work. PHOTOS: Kanye West's Indie Rock Dalliances Earlier this year, a federal judge dismissed the claim, finding not enough substantial similarity between the two songs. Peters was undeterred. As Nietzsche once said: "All things are subject to interpretation. Whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth." PHOTOS: Grammys: 10 Must-See Moments An appeal to a higher authority was made, giving West's attorney, Carrie Hall at Pryor Cashman, an opportunity to ridicule the plaintiff for his song theft allegations. If the plaintiff were to succeed, Hall writes, "it would create a dangerously low threshold for establishing copyright protection over otherwise commonplace words and phrases." The two songs share the title "Stronger," and both have references to supermodelKate Moss, but the biggest claim of substantial similarity comes in the chorus: Both parties admit that the chorus is a derivation from Nietzsche's maxim "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." And both songs do the business of rhyming "stronger" with "wronger," a wordplay that might garner the approval of Nietzsche, author of Beyond Good and Evil. PHOTOS: MTV VMAs Greatest Feuds But West's lawyer believes this isn't enough to support a claim for infringement. She argues that it's the plaintiff's responsibility to allege sufficient facts to establish substantial similarity and that a district court judge is within proper boundaries to examine the lyrics and make a determination whether they rise to the standards of a copyright claim. The title, Moss reference and Nietzsche maxim are all unprotectable, said that judge. PHOTOS: Kanye West and Others at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Others have gotten into trouble for interpretingNietzsche before, but one would think that the old philosopher would have approved of Peters' bold assertion of ownership and drive toward an appeal as a will to power. Unfortunately, for Peters,Nietzsche seems to also have a healthy skepticism of facts as the foundation of knowledge, suggesting the philosopher might ultimately agree with West here. Oh well, if the plaintiff doesn't win, at very least he can take some consolation in the Nietzschean maxim that serves as the inspiration for both the songs in question. The brief is below... Two months ago, she was quietly elevated to executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Sarnoff. Sarnoff, who wrote the version of the project that was picked up to pilot and then to series by Fox from an earlier incarnation by Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt, is now stepping down over creative differences, with feature writer Pyne (Fracture) coming in as an executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Johnson. His TV series credits include Miami Vice. Sarnoff is expected to receive an executive consultant title on the show going forward. The behind-the-scenes showrunner turnover was a factor in WBTV and Bad Robot’s decision 2 weeks ago to put filming of new episodes of Alcatraz on hold and do reshoots on some of the 7 completed episodes instead. After completing some reshoots, the show is not filming at the moment, with the writers working on scripts and producers and directors prepping for additional reshoots as well as filming new episodes. Alcatraz, which features inmates from the infamous prison popping up in present day San Francisco, is slated to premiere in midseason in the Monday 9 PM time period, which also is being eyed for the new Kiefer Sutherland drama Touch. Fox is expected to announce premiere dates for its midseason series in the coming days.

Some Guy Who Kills People
A Level 10 Films, Battle of Ireland Films and Litn-Up Films production. Produced by Ryan Levin, Michael Wormser, Micah Goldman. Executive producer, John Landis. Co-producers, Jack Perez, Kristin Holt. Directed by Jack Perez. Screenplay, Ryan Levin. With: Kevin Corrigan, Barry Bostwick, Karen Black, Leo Fitzpatrick, Ariel Gade, Lucy Davis, Eric Price, Lou Beatty Jr., Janie Haddad, Christopher May, Niko Nicotera, Jonathan Fraser, Britain Spellings, Lindsay Hollister, Regan Burns.Bringing together slasher horror, delusional-superhero seriocomedy and dysfunctional family-reunion uplift, "Some Guy Who Kills People" has few original elements, but does a neat job pulling familiar ones into one likable low-key stew. Kevin Corrigan stars as a former mental patient whose return to society coincides with a grotesque murder spree targeting those who'd bullied him. "Guy" might've won limited theatrical release a few years back, but recent underperformance of similar exercises like "Defendor" and "Super" suggest the likeliest outlets for this one will be home-format, where sales prospects look decent. Ryan Levin's script has 34-year-old Ken (Corrigan) still living like the most picked-on kid at school. In fact he's gone back there for more as a high-school janitor, when not laboring for a boorish ice-cream shop boss (Lou Beatty Jr.). He still lives with mom (Karen Black), who never misses a chance to remind him of his deficiencies, and has the same best/only friend in co-worker Irv (Leo Fitzpatrick). Indeed, the only thing that's changed between high school and now is that Ken spent most of the interim in a psychiatric ward, driven over the edge by a murky trauma glimpsed in recurrent flashbacks. A talented if unappreciated artist, he draws comicbooks about a superhero wreaking vengeance on those who evade justice. These acts seem to be coming to life via grisly local killings whose connecting thread the Sheriff (Barry Bostwick, pretty funny) and Deputy (Eric Price) are slow to uncover. Meanwhile, Ken's ability to continue to keep a profile so low it's subterranean is threatened on two fronts: First, transplanted Brit Stephanie (Lucy Davis) pretty much badgers him into dating her. Second, 11-year-old Amy (Ariel Gade), a daughter he never knew he had, shows up determined to assign him the dad role so as to escape her fundamentalist stepfather. Amy seems borderline-annoyingly precocious and chipper until we realize it's an act; she's as much a social misfit as her biological pa. Ken gradually warms to these intrusive new relationships, though erstwhile classmates keep dying, and the police are beginning to suspect him. A step up for helmer Jack Perez after several cheesy cable pics (like "Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus"), "Some Guy" is smoothly crafted, striking the right balance between ironic horror/noir-fantasy tropes, the comedy mostly in a deadpan improv vein, and some formulaic but well-earned sentimentality. In a rare lead role, Corrigan is aces, supporting thesps solid (though Black could have dialed it down a bit). Tech package is nicely turned.Camera (color, HD), Shawn Maurer; editor, Chris Conlee; music, Ben Zarai, David Kitchens; music supervisors, Patrick Belton, Sanaz Lavaedian; production designer, Zach Bangma; art director, Oliver Dear; costume designer, Vania Ouzounova; visual effects supervisor, Dear; sound, David Alvarez; sound designers, Zarai, Kitchens; re-recording mixer, Zarai; supervising sound editors, David Barber, Zarai; assistant director, Cory Johnson; casting, Lisa Essary. Acad's Oscar dilemma
As well as the champion is... certainly not the Academy. The big surprise wasn't the exit of Brett Ratner as Oscar producer but the fact he was hired to start with. It absolutely was another demonstration of AMPAS executives' dogged and misguided "why don't we get stylish" push to lure TV audiences. And when more, that tactic has switched around and bitten Oscar on his golden hind.Eddie Murphy's withdrawal as host on Wednesday was virtually another shoe losing. Nevertheless the whole flap points within the central dilemma for your Academy of motion Picture Arts & Sciences: In the world that's rapidly changing due to the economy, technology and audience tastes, the entertainment small business to ignore old business models. The format for your kudocast was radical in 1953, nevertheless the Academy and producers of other public honours shows, which simply imitate the Oscars, want to make bold options to produce the kudocasts to the twenty-first century. The employing of Ratner, to produce new perspective for the show, wasn't exactly bold: Cosmetic tweaks with a set-in-stone structure aren't the solution. If Academy honchos want a meeting that honors 24 groups equally round the air, that's their right once they and ABC professionals want a gangbusters Tv program that pulls huge audiences, that's great. But, clearly, they can't have both. And they have to find out they want.In some manner, somebody got the notion that the reply is to usher in fresh adding factors but pressure these to stay with the old format. Trust me, AMPAS professionals could hire Attacking Youthful Boys as well as the entire Kardashian family to host the show plus it still won't have the ratings they demand. The backlash against James Franco's hosting in February was from proportion to his performance (the media was a smaller amount critical of co-host Hathaway As Catwoman). Franco can be a gifted actor together with a multifaceted intellectual, which are not the initial qualities one seeks inside an Oscar host. Casting is essential in Hollywood, and Franco and Ratner were both oddly cast. As well as the media fury over Franco's work made an appearance a veiled slap within the Academy to get hired him.Similarly, Ratner has proven a effective director, but he's also cultivated a celebration-fratboy image. When he ongoing to push that image within the interview on "The Howard Stern Show" Monday, AMPAS professionals were shocked. But what did they expect?Ratner's homophobic remark was appalling and deserved being addressed. As appalling was AMPAS leader Tom Sherak's Monday whitewash in the comment: "He apologized and we'll proceed He's many pals that are people in the lgbt community." This can be a 2011 variation in the old "numerous my close buddies are..." excuse.Tom, In my opinion you're an excellent guy, however when I'm ever in the PR scrape, don't showed up inside my defense.Sherak needed a decidedly different tone within the comments after Ratner's bow-out Tuesday, saying Ratner "did the very best factor for your Academy too for themselves His comments were unacceptable."On Wednesday mid-day, AMPAS introduced its new producer: John Grazer (incidentally, a producer of "The Dilemma," which featured an unfunny anti-gay joke that Imagine rejected to eliminate despite protests).Grazer. Hmm. Clearly, the Academy isn't ready for a bold decision. But maybe next season. Contact Timothy M. Gray at tim.gray@variety.com

Weekend Box Office: 'Puss in Boots' Stomps 'Tower Heist,' 'Harold & Kumar'
All of this week's new wide releases, 'Tower Heist' and 'A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas,' include an Occupy Wall Street, proles-versus.-body body fat-cats subtext, nevertheless it would be a particular body body fat-cat who snapped up an unpredicted win laminator tl901 office. 'Puss in Boots' not only handled to outduel both beginners, but furthermore shocked by possessing most of the business it acquired throughout last weekend's record-breaking debut. 'Puss in Boots' was imagined getting extended legs not only did the 'Shrek' spinoff have strong word-of-mouth, it faced no new family-film competition a couple of days ago. Bloggers expected an average second-weekend drop around thirty five percent, to $22 million. Rather, 'Puss' fell behind the other day by basically a whisker, with estimations showing a three percent drop to $33. million. This is actually the least expensive non-holiday drop since 2003, when 'Brother Bear' dipped just 4.5 % throughout its second weekend in November. In 10 days, 'Puss' has collared $75.5 million. However, 'Tower Heist' was prone to open a lot more effective laptop or computer did, inside the $Thirty Dollars million range where Ben Stiller's wide release movies frequently open. Besides, that certain also boasted director Brett Ratner and Eddie Murphy (in the role broadly suggested just like a return to comic form). Yet it opened up up in second place and mustered just $25.millions of, according to studio estimations. Blame middling reviews, 'Harold & Kumar' and never enough youth appeal. Studio polling learned that 62 percent in the audience was over 30, meaning people not tall enough to think about when Eddie Murphy was funny didn't appear. Chronic underachievers Harold and Kumar also underperformed. Bloggers predicted a dent or dimple near to $17 million, good hit franchise's recognition, remarkably good reviews, as well as the taxes from 3d (used here with techniques that's really integral for the film rather than unnecessary). The pair's latest joint effort clipped only an thought $13.millions of and handle in third place. Maybe audiences have 3d fatigue carrying out a summer season of undistinguished 3d releases, or even 'Tower Heist' sharp many of the buddy-comedy audience. Rounding the very best 5: In fourth place, 'Paranormal Activity 3' scared up another $8.5 million, according to estimations, lower 53 percent from the other day, for just about any total of $95.3 million. At No. 5, sci-fi thriller 'In Time' wound up 36 percent to have an thought $7.7 million, for just about any two-week total of $24.2 million. Outdoors the most effective 10, speculative Shakespeare saga 'Anonymous' extended to 513 theaters and attracted inside an thought $1.3 million, finishing at No. 13 and scoring a couple-weekend total of $2.7 million. Extended-distance romance 'Like Crazy' made $270,000 just 16 locations, with an enormous per-screen average of $16,875 together with a 2-week total of $448,000. And outdoors the U.S., 'The Adventures of Tintin' clicked up another thought $40.8 million, brining its two-week total to $125.3 million. As of this rate, the eventual U.S. release the next month from the Steven Spielberg special seems almost an afterthought. Box office for your year remains off by about four percent, or $356 million, with 2011 grosses so far at $8.6 billion, compared to $8.9 billion by this time around around a year ago. 'Puss in Boots' - Trailer No. 3 The whole top: 1. 'Puss in Boots,' $33. million (3,693 screens), $75.5 million total 2. 'Tower Heist,' $25.millions of (3,367), era 3. 'A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas,' $13.millions of (2,865), era 4. 'Paranormal Activity 3,' $8.5 million (3,286), $95.3 million 5. 'In Time,' $7,7 million (3,127), $24.2 million 6. Media moguls's great disappearing act
News Corp. Boss Rupert Murdoch has apparently be irritated.
At any given time when Rupert Murdoch is constantly on the squirm the main attraction, could it be only coincidence that his fellow media moguls have grown to be semi-invisible towards the press? The entertainment industry was founded and fostered by symbols like Jack Warner and Wally Disney who appreciated center stage, however they were producers, not Harvard MBAs. Later decades of leaders like Michael Eisner coveted their role as politicians. Yet how frequently nowadays will we hear an invaluable insight from Philippe Dauman of Viacom, Mister Howard Stringer of The new sony, Steve Burke of Comcast NBC Universal as well as Bob Iger at Disney? They wield giant influence within the global entertainment industry but remain sealed within their corporate cocoons. In the last two days Iger has lost his greatest investor and many important director in Jobs and it has also signed a brand new five-year contract overtaking as chairman and leader. The only public pronouncement emerging from Disney was from the retiring chairman, John E. Pepper (whom nobody has ever encountered) reassuring stockholders that Iger "is really as fresh like a daisy -- people could possibly get tired when you are as busy because he is."Mentioning to "Cars 2," James B. Stewart authored a column within the NY Occasions asking, "Is Disney walking on Pixar inside a mission for franchise sales?" Disney's recent pronouncements, however, have centered on its enhanced profits from ESPN and it is amusement parks, looking over the bumpy outcomes of its totally updated film division. Burke, too, appears to become flummoxed regarding how to react to NBC's ever-steeper slide. "No network has have you been as far behind financially as NBC," he told an analyst conference lately, that his network chief, Bob Greenblatt, added, "we ought to expect it will likely be difficult because it will likely be difficult." OK. Jeffrey Bewkes of your time Warner is really as careful in the claims as with his deal-making, but nevertheless continues to be relatively open on Netflix and also the TV Everywhere initiative. Still he, too, continues to be wary about leaving comments on his TW corporate structure, where "teams" instead of single division chiefs still rule key industries.Because of the neverending explosions in Rupert Murdoch's world, a situation might be made that media moguls are smart to become prudent about public exposure. Murdoch, however, by choice moved in the role of corporate patriarch to that particular of political kingmaker. Based on individuals near to him, younger crowd is becoming progressively irritated and isolated.Anti-Murdoch sentiment comes from two distinct sources: The hacking scams focused attention on Murdoch's business philosophy -- win-at-any-cost, whether in breaking news or perhaps in breaking media rivals. Second, the prosperity of Fox News under Roger Ailes has effectively situated the Republican Party as the second Murdoch subsidiary. Using the approach of the emotional presidential election, Murdoch's role in polarizing the political process brings about shrill attention in media.Tallying up investor votes a week ago, several-third from the voters opposed coming back Murdoch's two sons, James and Lachlan, towards the board of company directors -- an effect that surprised even associates. The upshot is the fact that increasingly more people from the creative community regard Rupert Murdoch as toxic. If because of the choice, they would rather work with an adversary company. Fox professionals recognize this but insist that, till now, this really is rhetoric, not reality. Yet Murdoch's company is staffed by individuals who find their boss's politics to become abhorrent. The operating chief of Fox, Chase Carey, a Harvard Master of business administration, shows little curiosity about content and zero curiosity about politics. His predecessor, Peter Chernin, was broadly regarded as as a good "lid" on his boss, both when it comes to deals and ideology. Peter Grain, that has were built with a effective run both around the film side so that as chairman of Fox Broadcasting (who did not visit Harvard), is broadly rumored just as one successor to Chernin's role but openly follows the guidelines of media invisibility which are the model for each executive within the corporate culture. It's safe to become secretive. Now you ask , whether invisibility is definitely an acceptable role for individuals who wield huge influence over our worldwide popular culture. Can there be someone having a "vision" available somewhere hiding behind a Harvard diploma? 'Harold And Kumar three dimensional Christmas' Red-colored-Band Trailer: John Cho Weighs in at In
Just in case you skipped it, the red-colored band trailer for "A Really Harold And Kumar three dimensional Christmas" first showed at IGN yesterday. As well as in watching the 2 minutes and twenty seconds of very explicit, drug-fueled action, was not ever there a far more appropriate movie to garner the red-colored band label. Out of the box custom using the adventures of Harold and Kumar, you will find drugs, sex, violence and the most popular, Neil Patrick Harris. MTV News was sufficiently fortunate to get a couple of moments on the telephone with Harold themself, John Cho, to go over the miracle from the trailer and also don't be surprised in the complete film. Continue reading following the jump to discover what Cho needed to say about infant drug abuse, NPH and also the film's boob count. MTV News: What exactly have you think about a clip? There's certainly a great deal happening there. John Cho: I figured it will a great job to be comprehensive without having to be too graphic, if you achieve my drift. Ive seen lots of other spots and they are very clever. For that first movie a minimum of, I believe the marketing department had some difficulty getting together an offer that reflected exactly what the movie really was about, and this time around people have it. The marketing department really will get exactly what the franchise is all about, along with the general public. MTV: Which claymation scene appeared especially special, what's that about? Cho: Which was a genuine treat. You develop watching the vacation fare, the periodic programming and - oddly I connect claymation using the birth of Jesus our the almighty and messiah (laughs) - therefore it really was strange to become made from clay. Which was most likely probably the most difficult sequence from the movie writing-smart, because there is a pacing problem at that time, plus they didnt wish to lose individuals with exactly what is a mid-movie drug trip that does not really impact the plot by itself. Which was just a little tricky, however i think they first got it right. MTV: Let us discuss the nudity, because that's always an enjoyable subject. Can you say it's equal chance nudity? Or exist more breasts than male butts or anything? Cho: I believe its more breasts, since you benefit from the breasts and youre suffering although watching your penis get scammed a pole a minimum of I'm. MTV: My personal favorite area of the trailer may be the line: "And resurrecting America's sweetheart... Neil Patrick Harris," is he always an element of the story when you are writing new adventures for Harold and Kumar? Cho: To begin with, Neil Patrick Harris was an element of the first draft from the first movie and that he was forever in the film. There is no discussion about getting other people for that role, so hed been an intergral thing about this franchise then when we discuss carrying out a Harold and Kumar movie, its already understood were speaking about getting Neil Patrick Harris. MTV: There is a brief moment within the trailer in which you seem like you are in costume like a different character, you've lengthy hair and you will find strange colors without anyone's knowledge, having a "Fear And Loathing" turn to it, what's that about? Cho: (Laughs) That part is within mention of the, within the movie it works out that Maria- Harold is married to Maria, his passion curiosity about this movie - his father-in-law dosent like him also it works out that the gang of Korean punks wiped out his grandmother-in-law. To ensure that screen shot the thing is is his father-in-laws and regulations memory from the gang of punks that wiped out his mother, and all sorts of the gang people are performed by me. The one which was eliminate was me in drag. Im presuming that'll be around the DVD extra supplies because I looked effing good. I scared myself. We thought it might be funny to achieve the hardened gang people girlfriend filing her nails and yelling, Kill that bitch! MTV: Finally, we have seen that you have a baby who appears to obtain uncovered to a lot of drugs, could it be reliable advice that's a running gag within the film? Cho: You will notice the infant through the movie and oh God, being a parent, its appalling how high that baby will get throughout the path of the film. It had been tricky, Personally i think terrible being part of this, however they needed to employ a baby whisperer to trick the infant into not into doing actual drugs, but into acting out individuals situations. MTV: Did everyone inflict crazy stunt operate in this installment? Cho: The only real stunt I'm able to think about is needing to dance. Neil Patrick Harris within the movie is practicing with this Rockette, Christmas style spectacular and that we stumble in it. Its tough to explain, but we finish up onstage practicing with him outfitted as nutcrackers dancing a routine inside a kick line and stuff, that might be the stunt from the movie. Have I taunted it? Are you currently intrigued? What is your opinion? Are you currently excited for "A Really Harold And Kumar three dimensional Christmas?" Inform us within the comments or on Twitter!

BREAKING: Lindsay Lohan Sent Back to Jail For Violating Her Probation
This just in: Lindsay Lohan was handcuffed in court this morning and escorted back to jail after a judge revoked the actress’s probation for failing to meet her community service requirements. The judge accused Lohan of blowing off her sentence of 360 hours of community service at a women’s center in downtown Los Angeles. According to TMZ, the actress claimed that she did not find her work there “fulfilling.” After not showing up for nine scheduled appointments, the women’s center asked that she not return. The county probation department in turn sent the actress to log community service hours with Red Cross. This morning, the judge determined that the department had no authority make that decision and Lohan’s hours with the Red Cross would not count towards her sentence. Lohan’s attorney, Shawn Holley, defended the actress’s absence from the women’s center by claiming Lohan “had to earn a living to support herself and her family” and her opportunities are in Europe. TMZ reports that the judge responded by saying, “She’s supposed to be an actress, from what I hear.” Lohan’s bail was set at $100,000. The judge told the actress that she must complete 16 hours of community service at the county coroner’s office before her November 2 probation violation hearing to avoid further punishment. The Cinema Audio Society opened the submissions process for the CAS Awards with a big change: scoring mixers will be added to the mix in three categories: motion pictures, television movie or miniseries, and DVD original programming. In making this change, said CAS President David E. Fluhr, "I am delighted that the CAS Board is beginning the expansion of our nominee base Recognizing all mixers who contribute to an outstanding achievement in sound mixing is a long-time goal of the CAS, and we will continue moving forward." The 48th annual CAS Awards nominees will be announced on January 19 and the CAS Awards will be held February 18, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.* * *Todd-AO has completed a technical overhaul of ADR stage 5 at its Hollywood studios. One of the largest facilities of its type in Hollywood, the ADR stage has been equipped with a new Pro Tools workstation, a Soundmaster ION operating environment and a Christie HD playback system. The new integration provides the stage with an all-digital infrastructure resulting in enhanced quality and efficiency for voice recording. The Soundmaster ION will be used to synchronize the Pro Tools system with a separate recording system, microphones, remote feeds, samplers, and a boom recorder used for back-up."We have created a state-of-the-art recording facility that offers all functionality that producers and talent expect from a world-class ADR room," said Bill Johnston, senior veep of engineering at CSS Studios, Todd-AO's parent company. "The new technology provides increased flexibility so that we can better meet the evolving needs of our clients."* * *Addressing the scarcity of skilled programmers entering the visual effects field, London vfx house Cinesite's Inspire internship program now includes a separate technical effects track that specifically targets grads with an interest in computer programming or technical effects. "We've had great success over the past two years finding talented graduates to fill our traditional visual effects internship, but we've noticed that our industry is severely lacking young talented computer programmers," said Antony Hunt, managing director of Cinesite. "With this new strand we're aiming to attract graduates with science degrees and educate them on how they can build a career in this exciting world-class industry."The technical effects internship will run in conjunction with the visual effects internship. Both placements are paid positions and will run for six weeks in the summer of 2012. The technical effects strand is targeting people with interests in writing shaders and programming for pipelines, as well as aspiring effects TDs. The vfx track targets people with interests in digital matte painting, animation, lighting, texturing, modeling, fx and compositing. Previous Inspire winners have worked on "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and are currently working on "John Carter" and "World War Z." Matt Reeves Enters The Twilight Zone
He'll direct the film for WarnersWarner Bros. and producer Leonardo DiCaprio are clearly not hanging around when it comes to getting a new Twilight Zone film on its feet. Just a couple of weeks ago there came word that the studio was looking down a list of big-name directors to make the movie, with Christopher Nolan, Alfonso Cuaron and David Yates all floated as possibilities. But now Warners has made its choice: Let Me In man Matt Reeves is sitting in the chair. Reeves wasn't mentioned in the original report, but he's certainly a director in demand after the success of Cloverfield and the vampire remake. He'll be tackling a script by Jason Rothenberg that departs from the multi-story approach of the 1983 movie and unravels a single plot strand. There's no word yet on what exactly that will be, but it reportedly touches on the themes of Rod Serling's classic anthology series.Yet we do wonder whether this means all his other possible projects are now going to have to sit and wait while he tackles Serling's legacy. He's got one of the many Frankenstein projects (young Victor project This Dark Endeavour at Summit), vampire novel adaptation The Passage and a new take on sci-fi short story 8 O'clock in the Morning in various stages of development. We'd guess Warners will want the Zone to jump to the front of the queue, but we'll have to wait and see...

House: The Brand New Dean of drugs Talks!
House, Omar Epps There is a new Dean of drugs at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. As well as on Monday's episode of House, that new dean was Dr. Gregory House's ticket from prison. After House (Hugh Laurie) drove his vehicle through her house, Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) left her publish in the hospital. And taking her place is the one and only Dr. Eric Foreman (Omar Epps)! Foreman turned up in the prison having a judge's order release a House on conditional parole under Foreman's supervision. The issue: House must go back to a healthcare facility to assist his fellow doctors save a body organ donor's lung area to ensure that a transplant patient can receive them. And as you may expect, not everybody at Princeton-Plainsboro is satisfied to determine House. Fall Preview: Get scoop on all of your favorite coming back shows So was House worth it? And can he really respect Foreman's new authority? We talked with Epps about everything and much more. Plus: Exactly what does Foreman see in Dr. Park (Charlyne Yi)? That which was your reaction whenever you discovered they would cause you to the boss?Omar Epps: I believed it was great. I believed it was creative. It had been an excellent change-up for me personally, and that i only agreed to be excited to determine how it is going to pan out and just how the connection and banter between Foreman and House normally takes on its new existence. What type of leader do you consider we are likely to see Foreman be this season?Epps: Well, I believe it will likely be a mix of several things. The Foreman of old is fairly thorough and virtually a tough a-- and merely gives creedence to particulars. But simultaneously, when you are running this type of huge operation, it's difficult to micromanage. House exclusive: Obtain a start looking at unseen photos Why do you consider Foreman went of his method to bring House to Princeton-Plainsboro?Epps: Clearly Foreman likes you the man, as well as he provides extensive respect for him. He essentially puts his neck out at risk... This is actually the last guy they need in a healthcare facility. But in the finish during the day, he's still the very best physician. Foreman's playing the politics and also the reality simultaneously. But when it comes to the friendship together, it is simply where for him to become. Home is kind of repairing his existence and returning in to the hospital will work for each of them over time. We have seen Foreman step-up before also it triggered tension with House. Are we able to expect a lot of same? Epps: I believe there's some tension there but it is kind of balancing itself out. The end result is, Foreman may be the boss, and he's running a healthcare facility. And i believe that you have a mutual respect there. I believe that House realizes the magnitude from the risk that Foreman takes. Once the student becomes the teacher, that's just kind of a strange dichotomy. However I think House realizes the mistake in the ways. And it is been annually, so existence has completely managed to move on. [Foreman] is a person from his past that's reaching to say, "Hey, I care about your needs and let us assist you to rebuild your existence." Because Foreman takes this type of risk, will House attempt to behave, a minimum of in the beginning?Epps: (Laughs) I believe you realize the response to that question. It will likely be interesting to determine what lengths House complements that, because in the finish during the day, the stakes are really the. This isn't nearly Foreman putting his neck out. House can return to jail at any time. So he certainly does not want that but, he's still likely to be themself. 6 Burning questions from House's Season 8 premiere Cuddy accustomed to call Foreman "House-lite" due to his readiness to complete whatever to resolve a situation. So somewhat, House could find Foreman to become a perfect boss.Epps: Certainly. I believe he's lucked out. Foreman is somebody that knows House's approach to madness. So that will try to House's favor sometimes. And i believe it'll try to Foreman's hindrance sometimes. Same with House worth it? Epps: I believe Foreman knows ... how House works. It's like getting Bret Favre become your quarterback: You realize he will throw a few interceptions, however, you might win the overall game. ... They know to possess House operating at full capacity, he's going to need to provide him that space.Hopefully he will not f--- some misconception bad. How's the relaxation from the team likely to respond to Foreman as Dean of drugs, presuming they return? Epps: Whenever we start the growing season everyone's been gone - literally no a person's in the hospital. House has been around jail. It has been annually, so existence went on. But eventually, I believe that individuals associations are likely to engage in. I believe that's a part of what we'll uncover within the approaching episodes. House Season 8 scoop: Cuddy fallout, new bloodstream along with a go back to the show's roots There's several new bloodstream. Exactly what does Foreman see in Dr. Park (Yi) he would save her from her dust-up in neurology? Epps: I wouldn't say she's a Foreman protégé, but... Foreman includes a soft place on her and thinks she's certainly capable. I additionally think a part of that camaraderie between Foreman and her is going to be that Foreman may have some eyes inside. He may expect that loyalty, but I'm not sure if he's always getting it. We know Dr. Adams (Odette Annable), who House met imprisonment can make her method to a healthcare facility. Epps: That kind of happens inside a strange way. She's not really a Foreman hire. That eventually ends up coming with House's new kind of baggage. Foreman ... needs to feel that certain out. After I spoke with creator David Shoreline, he stated 13 (Olivia Wilde) is going to be saying goodbye. As somebody who had some romantic history together with her, will Foreman have that? Epps: I'd rather not give that certain away. We'll see. I believe should you return to last season which was kind of worked with. But I'm not sure. Who knows what is going to happen later on. So, if House goes too much, will Foreman have the ability to rein him in?Epps: I believe he will put his feet lower, but it will likely be a fight. You place your feet lower with House, he tries to locate a way around it. But Foreman used to dedicate yourself House, so they know all his methods. He assisted facilitate half the madness. So for the reason that sense, he's kind of one step ahead and that he feels positive about as being a step ahead. Simultaneously, they know Home is going get a new bag of methods, so Foreman has to stay sharp. Both of them realize that the stakes are high. So, I believe the reins are as tight because they have have you been. It's among individuals things where it's the two of you guys' last chance. If the guy messes up, you are both from here. Do you consider Foreman was the best choice?

At NYFF: Is 'My Week With Marilyn' This Year's 'The King's Speech'?
Being reductive about a film as lovingly crafted as 'My Week With Marilyn' feels a bit cheap, but considering Oscar season is all about reductions: if you were wondering which upcoming bit of Oscar bait could be the heir(ess) apparent to 'The King's Speech' look no further than 'Marilyn.' From the film's main theme (by 'The King's Speech' composer Alexandre Desplat) to the presence of Harvey Weinstein's name in credits to a lead performance, here by Michelle Williams, that seems destined for awards glory, 'My Week With Marilyn' shares more with the most recent Best Picture winner than you might have assumed. Which is its strength, as well as its limitation. Based on the diaries of Colin Clark, 'My Week With Marilyn' is a coming-of-age story masked as a biopic. Or a biopic masked as a coming-of-age story. In 1956, at the ripe age of "nearly 24," Clark (Eddie Redmayne) leaves home to work as a third assistant director on the set of 'The Princess and the Showgirl' with Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) and Marilyn Monroe (Williams). Over the course of the shoot -- which Monroe extends beyond the norms because of her devotion to the Method style of acting championed by Lee and Paula Strasberg -- Clark and the world's most famous leading lady fall into a complicated relationship of love and need, much to the consternation of Olivier, Marilyn's main handler Milton Greene (Dominic Cooper, in full Howard Stark mode) and Colin's maybe-girlfriend Lucy (Emma Watson, Hermione'ing it up). Colin's in over his head with Marilyn, but the pull of her come-hither winks and little-girl-lost persona is too much for any man to stand. At least that's what the film tells us. Repeatedly. Like 'The King's Speech,' this is a "tell, don't show" production: through needless voiceover and heavy-handed dialogue, 'My Week With Marilyn' hammers home its slight points -- that Colin will get his heart broken; that Monroe is playing a part and unable to escape, even if she wants to -- in a way that recalls an HBO telefilm. Thank goodness then for the performances. Not that you're surprised, but Williams is perfection as Ms. Monroe. She nails the nuance and subtlety of the role -- which really requires three different personalities: the public Marilyn Monroe, the private Marilyn Monroe and the part in 'The Princess and the Showgirl.' "You want to think of them together, because they need to adhere," Williams said at a post screening Q&A at the NY Film Festival on Sunday. "I know that there are three different aspects, but I don't know how much it helps to think of them as three separate people." Williams is the least showy aspect of the film, an astonishing fact since so many portrayals of Monroe border on cartoon. You can tell the work she put into this performance: not just with the voice, mannerisms and attitude, but with the eyes. Williams draws you into Monroe's wounded soul slowly, carefully and deliberately. It's really too early to discuss Oscar locks and frontrunners -- not that we haven't already -- but it seems highly probable that Williams will be on the short-list of Best Actress contenders come next February. As for the rest of the cast: Redmayne is adorably naive and mouth-gaped throughout, giving Colin a bit of hapless charm that never feels forced. Branagh gets the showboat-y role of Olivier -- Sir Larry to his friends -- playing the acting titan as both blustering idiot and cold-eyed perfectionist, an aging prat who uses "honesty" as a way to cut down all opponents. Everyone else is reliably British and solid, with Dame Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, Toby Jones and Julia Ormand knocking out their brief scenes and moments with professionalism and grace. Which is the problem: for a movie about a forbidden love with one of Hollywood's biggest and most inscrutable stars, 'My Week With Marilyn' feels too professional. It's all too safe. Like 'The King's Speech,' it's as gorgeous as a still photograph -- the film never moves. Simon Curtis, a veteran of British television work making his feature debut here, has something to with that -- his style makes Tom Hooper look like David Fincher -- but he's given no help from the on-the-nose script. Not that it ultimately matters: 'My Week With Marilyn' is a performance movie and, as Redmayne confirmed after the film, that is Curtis's strength. "The reason so many extraordinary actors were working on this film was because they love working for Simon," said Redmayne. "He has a wonderful facility with actors." All of which is to say, don't be surprised if Harvey Weinstein has another Oscar ace up his sleeve; after all, the actor's branch is the largest voting block in the Academy. When The Weinstein Company grabbed Cannes favorite 'The Artist,' many assumed it would become Harvey's Best Picture cause célèbre. It still might. With 'My Week With Marilyn,' though, 'The Artist' could very well have some inter-office company.
